Three Children
Three Chances
to Learn

In South Africa, more than one in three people is a child. For millions of them, the chance of a good education is shaped before they are even born, by inequalities that still run deep.

South Africa’s leaders have recognized that a child’s earliest years matter most. Yet about one million children aged three to five still don’t have access to any early learning programs before they go to primary school.

This year, deep cuts to US foreign aid have left many programs for children and families across Africa without funding. That makes community-led organizations, and the people who stand behind them, more important than ever.

At age four, fewer than half of children in early learning programs are on track to start school ready to learn. For children with no access to preschool at all, it’s fewer than one in five.

Those numbers aren’t a verdict on the children. They reflect what was, and wasn’t, around them: a dedicated early childhood teacher who prepared them for school, a trained teacher, a classroom that makes room for every kind of learner.

8 in 10

By age ten, eight in ten children can’t read with understanding in any language.

Three children, three stories

That’s why, this fall, we’re introducing you to three children, each supported by one of our partners. You’ll learn who they are, what has changed for them, and what they’re working toward now.

Each comes from a different kind of program: early learning and inclusion for children with disabilities (Siyakwazi), support for early childhood centers in informal settlements (True North), and a low-fee independent school (Kgololo Academy). Together, they show how our partners are leveling the playing field for children across South Africa.

Committed to children, year after year

Even Ground was founded in 2003 by students from the US and South Africa. More than 20 years later, we still work the same way: we back community-based organizations doing high-impact work close to home, and we stay with them, through good years and hard ones.

Today we support six partners, who together reached 6,358 children and 5,459 families in 2025. We are now increasing both our funding and our capacity-building support for them, so that each year they can reach more children and you can see more clearly what your support makes possible.

Support Even Ground

Give more children a chance to learn.

Isenathi, Melokuhle and Lesego each had someone who believed in them and helped them learn. Your gift helps our partners do the same for thousands more children. Stand with these children, and the organizations that serve them, with a gift to this year’s Fall Campaign.
